Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was taking classes in secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher was cut short. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words and performing in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. During Roots performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained more experiences on the stage, as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
